Francis Lyon Cohen

Rabbi and musicologist (1862–1934)

Francis Lyon Cohen was a prominent English Orthodox rabbi, author, and musicologist, specializing in Hebrew music. Born in 1862, he made significant contributions to the field of Judaism, showcasing his expertise as the music editor of The Jewish Encyclopedia from 1901 to 1906. His work in this capacity highlighted his deep understanding of Hebrew music and its importance in Jewish culture.

Cohen's career was marked by several notable achievements, including his role as the founder of The Jewish Lads' Brigade. He also made history by becoming the first Jewish chaplain in the British Army, serving from 1892 to 1904. After being succeeded by Rev Michael Adler, Cohen went on to conclude his career as the Chief Minister of the Great Synagogue in Sydney, Australia, where he ultimately passed away in 1934. Throughout his life, Cohen demonstrated a strong commitment to his faith and community, leaving a lasting legacy in the field of Judaism.
