Gabor Boritt
American historian (1940–2026)
Gabor Boritt was a Hungarian-born American historian who made significant contributions to the field of history, particularly in the areas of Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War. Born in 1940, Boritt's early life was marked by his participation in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, after which he escaped to the United States. He pursued higher education in America, laying the foundation for his future academic pursuits.
As a renowned scholar, Boritt held the position of Robert Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies and Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. His literary output was substantial, with 16 books authored, co-authored, or edited on the topics of Lincoln and the Civil War. Boritt's work was recognized with the National Humanities Medal in 2008, which was presented to him by President George W. Bush. He passed away in 2026, leaving behind a legacy as a prominent historian of his time.
