Gilles Bernheim

French rabbi

Gilles Bernheim is a French-Israeli rabbi who has held prominent positions within the Jewish community. Born in 1952 in Aix-les-Bains, Savoie, he went on to become a respected figure in French Judaism. Prior to his election as Chief Rabbi of France, Bernheim served as the rabbi of the synagogue de la Victoire in Paris, a position he held from 1997.

Bernheim's tenure as Chief Rabbi of France, which began in 2009, was marked by both respect and controversy. He was widely regarded as a scholar within the Jewish community and the broader academic world. However, his time in this position was cut short when he resigned in April 2013, following allegations of plagiarism and misrepresentation of his academic credentials. Despite this, his earlier work and contributions to the field of Judaism remain a part of his legacy as a French rabbi.
