American composer, librettist and stage director

Herschel Garfein is a multifaceted American artist, excelling as a composer, librettist, and stage director. He is also a faculty member at the Steinhardt School of Music at New York University, where he imparts his knowledge by teaching Script Analysis. Garfein's work spans various genres, showcasing his versatility and creative range. His collaborations with other artists have led to notable achievements, including his work with composer Robert Aldridge.

Garfein's notable compositions and librettos include the Grammy Award-winning opera Elmer Gantry, which he co-created with Robert Aldridge, and the oratorio Parables, another collaboration with Aldridge. His musical Suenos draws inspiration from Hispanic rhythms, demonstrating his ability to incorporate diverse cultural influences into his work.
