Hanoch Kalai
Irgun and Lehi leader
Hanoch Kalai was a prominent figure in Jewish activism, notably serving as a senior leader of the Irgun organization. His involvement in the group was marked by significant responsibilities, including the role of Deputy Commander in Chief under the leadership of David Raziel. Kalai's expertise extended beyond military strategy, as he was also recognized for his proficiency in the Hebrew language. His leadership capabilities were further underscored by his brief tenure as Commander in Chief of Irgun, a position he held for three months following Raziel's imprisonment by British authorities.
Kalai's activism also led him to co-found the Lehi organization, where he worked closely with Avraham Stern as his deputy. However, his time with Lehi was limited, as he eventually chose to leave the organization. Despite this, Kalai's contributions to both Irgun and Lehi remain significant, reflecting his commitment to the causes these groups represented. Through his roles in these organizations, Kalai played a part in shaping the landscape of Jewish activism during a tumultuous period in history.
