Heinrich Schenker

Austrian music theorist (1868–1935)

Heinrich Schenker was a prominent Austrian music theorist, born in 1868. His work has had a lasting impact on the field of musical analysis, shaping the way composers and musicians understand music. Schenker's theoretical approach, which would come to be known as Schenkerian analysis, offered a new perspective on the structure and composition of music.

Schenker's most comprehensive explanation of his theory was presented in a three-volume series, Neue musikalische Theorien und Phantasien. The series included Harmony, published in 1906, Counterpoint, and Free Composition, which was released in 1935, the year of his death. Through these writings, Schenker established himself as a leading figure in music theory, leaving a legacy that continues to influence musical analysis to this day. He passed away in 1935, at the age of 67, but his contributions to the field of music remain significant and enduring.
