Mordecai Bauman
American opera singer (1912–2007)
Mordecai Bauman was a versatile American artist, excelling as a baritone, actor, director, voice teacher, conductor, and fine arts administrator. Born in 1912 in The Bronx, he pursued higher education at esteemed institutions, including the Juilliard School, Columbia University, and Case Western University. This strong educational foundation laid the groundwork for his successful performance career, which spanned several decades from the early 1930s to the 1960s.
Bauman's performance career was marked by diversity and a commitment to promoting American music. He appeared on Broadway, recorded operas and art songs, and frequently performed the works of living American composers in concert. Notably, he was closely associated with the music of Charles Ives, showcasing his dedication to American musical heritage.
