Sabita Devi

Indian actress (1914–1998)

Sabita Devi was a prominent Indian film actress who played a significant role in the pioneering era of Indian cinema. Born in 1914, she was one of the leading ladies of her time, alongside notable actresses such as Mehtab, Bibbo, and Devika Rani. Originally Jewish, Sabita Devi adopted a new name to gain acceptance in the Hindi film industry, a common practice among Anglo-Indian and Jewish actresses of her era. Her career began with British Dominion Films Ltd. in Calcutta, but she soon shifted to Bombay to pursue more opportunities.

Sabita Devi's film career flourished in Bombay, particularly with Sagar Movietone productions, where she frequently starred alongside actor Motilal. The pair appeared in several popular films, including Dr. Madhurika (1935), Kulvadhu (1937), and Silver King (1935), an action film that achieved huge success. Their on-screen partnership began with Shaher Ka Jadoo (1934), Motilal's debut film, and continued with Lagna Bandhan (1936), both directed by Kaliprasad Ghosh. Sabita Devi's contributions to Indian cinema spanned several decades, and she remained a notable figure in the industry until her passing in 1998.
