Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter was a prominent Polish Hasidic rabbi who lived from 1847 to 1905. He held significant positions within the Jewish community, serving as the Av beis din and Rav of Góra Kalwaria, Poland. This role was a continuation of his family's legacy, as he succeeded his grandfather, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Alter, in this position.
As a respected leader, Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter also became the Rebbe of the Gerrer Hasidim, succeeding Rabbi Chanokh Heynekh HaKohen Levin of Aleksander. He is perhaps best known by the title of his main work, the Sfas Emes, also referred to as Sefat Emet. Through his writings and leadership, Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter left a lasting impact on the Hasidic community and Jewish tradition, earning recognition as a notable figure in the history of Judaism.
