Abu al-Bayan ibn al-Mudawwar
Egyptian court physician
Abu al-Bayan ibn al-Mudawwar was a prominent Karaite Jew who lived in Cairo during the 12th century. Born in 1101, he pursued a career in medicine, ultimately rising to the position of court physician. In this capacity, he served the last Egyptian Fatimid caliphs, providing medical expertise to the ruling elite.
Ibn al-Mudawwar's career continued under the patronage of Saladin, who also employed him as a court physician. He remained in this position until the age of 63, at which point Saladin granted him a pension. Following his retirement, ibn al-Mudawwar was succeeded by several notable physicians, including the renowned Maimonides. He passed away in 1184, leaving behind a legacy as a respected figure in the medical community of medieval Cairo.
