Emanuel Rackman

American rabbi (1910–2008)

Emanuel Rackman was a prominent American rabbi, born in 1910, who played a significant role in the Modern Orthodox community. He held various leadership positions, including president of the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) and vice-president of Yeshiva University. Rackman's influence extended beyond the United States, as he served as the president of Bar-Ilan University in Israel from 1977 to 1986. Throughout his career, he was a respected figure in major congregations, where he led with distinction.

Rackman was also a vocal advocate for social justice, particularly in the cases of Refuseniks, Soviet Jews who were denied the right to emigrate, and Agunot, women trapped in marriages due to their husbands' refusal to grant a Get, a religious divorce decree. He worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the plight of Refuseniks and to find solutions for the Agunot, highlighting the complexities of these issues within the context of Halacha, Jewish law. Emanuel Rackman passed away in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, advocacy, and commitment to the Orthodox community.
