André Ungar

Hungarian philosopher (1929–2020)

André Ungar was a Hungarian philosopher born in 1929, whose life's work spanned multiple disciplines and continents. As a Holocaust survivor, he brought a unique perspective to his pursuits, which included earning a doctorate in philosophy. Ungar's expertise also extended to liturgy, and he was a devoted social activist. His spiritual leadership took him to various parts of the world, including England, South Africa, and the United States.

Ungar's rabbinical career was marked by a long tenure at Temple Emanuel of the Pascack Valley, where he served as a rabbi for 44 years. Initially based in Westwood, the temple later relocated to Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, with Ungar continuing to provide spiritual guidance to his community. Throughout his life, Ungar's experiences and knowledge informed his work as a philosopher, liturgist, and social activist, leaving a lasting impact until his passing in 2020.
