Anshel Schorr
American playwright (1871–1942)
Anshel Schorr, also known as Albert Schorr, was a multifaceted figure in the American entertainment industry, born in Austria in 1871. He made a name for himself as a playwright, lyricist, theater manager, and composer, with a particular focus on the Yiddish Theatre. Throughout his career, Schorr collaborated with numerous notable figures of his time, including Joseph Rumshinsky, Arnold Perlmutter, and prominent actors such as Molly Picon, Jacob P. Adler, and David Kessler.
Schorr's body of work is impressive, with over fifty plays and operettas to his credit, many of which were widely performed in Europe and the Americas. His music also gained popularity through recordings by contemporary artists, including Pepi Litman, Pesach Burstein, Mordechai Hershman, and Simon Paskal. Schorr's personal life was also intertwined with the theatre, as his wife, Dora Weissman, was a well-known Yiddish theatre actor. He passed away in 1942, leaving behind a legacy as a significant contributor to the Yiddish Theatre of the early twentieth century.
