Burton Richter
American physicist
Burton Richter was a prominent American physicist who made significant contributions to the field of physics. His most notable achievement came in 1974 when he led a team at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) to co-discover the J/ψ meson, a groundbreaking finding that was simultaneously achieved by a team at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) led by Samuel Ting. This discovery played a crucial role in the November Revolution of particle physics, a period of major advancements in the field.
Richter's work on the J/ψ meson earned him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1976, which he shared with Samuel Ting. In addition to his research accomplishments, Richter also held a leadership position at SLAC, serving as the director from 1984 to 1999. During his tenure, he oversaw the center's operations and contributed to its growth and development. Through his research and leadership, Richter left a lasting impact on the field of physics, and his discovery of the J/ψ meson remains a seminal moment in the history of particle physics.
