Chaïm Perelman

Chaïm Perelman was a prominent Belgian philosopher of Polish-Jewish descent, born in 1912. He made significant contributions to the field of philosophy, particularly in the realm of argumentation theory. As one of the most influential argumentation theorists of the 20th century, Perelman's work had a profound impact on the development of this discipline.
Perelman's magnum opus, Traité de l'argumentation – la nouvelle rhétorique, was co-authored with Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca and published in 1958. This seminal work was later translated into English as The New Rhetoric: A Treatise on Argumentation by John Wilkinson and Purcell Weaver in 1969. Through his writings, Perelman left a lasting legacy in the world of philosophy, and his ideas continue to be studied and revered. He passed away in 1984, leaving behind a body of work that remains essential to the study of argumentation theory.
