Chana Kowalska
Jewish Polish painter
Chana Kowalska was a Jewish Polish painter whose artistic style was influenced by her rural upbringing. Born in 1899, she pursued a career in art, creating works that reflected her origins. In addition to her painting, Kowalska was also a journalist, demonstrating her versatility in creative expression. Her life took a significant turn when she moved to Paris, where she became involved in various activities beyond her art.
In Paris, Kowalska engaged with Jewish Communist organizations and wrote about art for local publications. She also played a role in the French Resistance, actively working against the German occupation. However, her involvement in the Resistance ultimately led to her arrest by the Gestapo. In July 1942, Kowalska was deported to Auschwitz, a fate that marked the end of her life around that time. Despite the tragic circumstances of her death, Kowalska's legacy as a painter and her commitment to social and political causes continue to be remembered.
