Dora Gordine

Estonian-British artist (1895–1991)

Dora Gordine was a renowned Estonian-British artist, born in 1895, who made a significant mark in the world of sculpture. Her early work was shaped by the Noor Eesti group of artists, who favored the Art Nouveau style. As she progressed in her career, Gordine's talent and reputation grew, particularly after her move to Paris. Her marriage to Hon. Richard Hare in 1936 marked a significant turning point, expanding her career and earning her recognition as one of the finest sculptors of her generation.

Gordine's specialization in portrait sculptures attracted a wide range of admirers from the political, social, artistic, literary, and theatrical worlds. Her work also included a number of public space pieces, leaving a lasting legacy. Although her latter career was not as prolific, and she had faded from the public eye by the time of her death in 1991, Gordine's contributions to the art world have been rediscovered in recent years. Major exhibitions in London in 2006 and 2009 have helped to revive her standing, and her former home has been converted into a museum, ensuring her artistic legacy continues to be celebrated.
