Egon Ledeč
Czech violinist and composer (1889–1944)
Egon Ledeč was a Czech violinist and composer of Jewish origin, born on 16 March 1889, in Kostelec nad Orlici, to parents Samuel and Luisa Ledeč. His life's work was dedicated to the field of music, where he established himself as a skilled violinist and composer. Ledeč's talent eventually led him to become the concertmaster in Karel Ančerl's orchestra, a position that would be documented in the Nazi propaganda film Theresienstadt: A Documentary Film from the Jewish Settlement Area.
Ledeč's life took a tragic turn when he was sent to Theresienstadt, a fate shared by many artists and musicians of Jewish origin during that time. He was later transported to Auschwitz on 16 October 1944, alongside other notable musicians, including Gideon Klein, Viktor Ullmann, Rafael Schächter, and Franz Eugen Klein. Unfortunately, Ledeč did not survive the ordeal, and his life was cut short. His legacy, however, remains an important part of Czech musical history, serving as a testament to his enduring contributions to the world of music.
