Ellen Cantor

Ellen Cantor was a versatile American artist born in 1961 in Detroit, Michigan, to a Jewish family. She pursued higher education at Brandeis University, where she earned a degree in painting in 1983. Cantor further refined her artistic skills at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1991. This foundation in the arts would later inform her unique approach to creative expression.

Cantor's artistic practice was characterized by the fusion of disparate elements, including pornography, politics, pop culture, and handmade techniques. Her diverse body of work encompassed paintings, drawings, sculptures, videos, and films. Notably, her experimental film work, such as the soap opera-style film Pinochet Porn, explored the experiences of children growing up under Augusto Pinochet's regime in Chile. Through her innovative and provocative approach, Cantor established herself as a distinct voice in the art world until her passing in 2013.
