Esther Frumkin

Belarusian Bundist revolutionary and publicist, Soviet politician

Esther Frumkin was a prominent figure in the revolutionary and political landscape of Eastern Europe. Born as Malkhe Khaye Lifshitz, she also went by the name Mariya Yakovlevna Frumkina. Her career was marked by her involvement with the General Jewish Labour Bund, a organization she led in Lithuania, Poland, and Russia. Frumkin's leadership and publicist work had a significant impact on the political scene of her time.

As a Soviet politician, Frumkin later became a key figure in the Yevsektsiya, a Jewish section of the Soviet Communist Party. She was a strong advocate for the Yiddish language and culture. However, her stance on Jewish assimilation proved to be a contentious issue, failing to satisfy both traditional Jewish communities and Soviet leaders. Her unique political position reflected the complexities of her time, navigating the intersection of Jewish identity, language, and politics within the Soviet context.
