Frans Krajcberg

Polish-Brazilian artist

Frans Krajcberg was a multifaceted artist of Polish origin who later became a prominent figure in Brazil. Born in Poland, he would eventually find solace in the natural world after the turmoil of World War II. This connection to nature deepened after his relocation to São Paulo in 1948, laying the groundwork for his future artistic endeavors.

As a painter, sculptor, engraver, and photographer, Krajcberg's work took a significant turn in the 1960s, as he began to incorporate mixed-medium art into his practice. This shift was largely driven by his growing concern for environmental issues, particularly the destruction of Brazilian forests. Through his art, Krajcberg sought to raise awareness about the devastating impact of illegal forest fires, often using burnt wood from these fires as a material in his pieces. His work thus became a powerful form of environmental activism, denouncing the destruction of natural habitats and advocating for their preservation.
