Gary Graffman
American musician (1928–2025)
Gary Graffman was a renowned American classical pianist, dedicated teacher, and accomplished administrator. Born in 1928, he established himself as a prominent figure in the music world, showcasing his exceptional talent as a pianist. However, his performing career took a significant turn when he lost control of his right hand, prompting him to explore new possibilities in music. This adversity led to a notable achievement in 1985, when he gave the UK premiere of Korngold's Piano Concerto for the left hand, demonstrating his adaptability and perseverance as a musician.
As his performing career evolved, Graffman transitioned into teaching and administration, drawing from his own experiences as a student at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He went on to become a respected teacher at the institution, and later took on leadership roles as director and president. During his tenure, he commissioned seven left-hand works, further expanding the repertoire for pianists with similar physical limitations. Through his multifaceted career, Graffman left a lasting impact on the world of classical music, inspiring generations of musicians and educators until his passing in 2025.
