Hugo Perls

German art dealer and historian (1886–1977)

Hugo Perls was a multifaceted individual, born on 24 May 1886 in Rybnik, Upper Silesia, to a region that would undergo significant changes in nationality during his lifetime, shifting from German to Polish. His academic pursuits took him to the University of Freiburg and Berlin, where he delved into the fields of law, philosophy, and art history. This foundational knowledge would later inform his career as an art dealer and historian.

Perls' professional path began in the German civil service, with a stint at the Ministry of the Interior, followed by a tenure in the German Foreign Office during the tumultuous period of World War I. On a personal note, he married his first wife, Kaethe, in 1910. As his life unfolded, Perls would go on to become an international art dealer, philosopher, and collector, leaving an indelible mark in his respective fields until his passing in 1977.
