Joseph Green (actor)

American actor (1900–1996)

Joseph Green was an American actor born as Yoysef Grinberg in Poland. He later adopted several stage names, including Josef Grünberg, Joseph Greenberg, and Joseph Greene. Born in 1900, Green emigrated to the United States in 1924, where he established himself as a prominent figure in Yiddish theater. His career spanned multiple facets of the entertainment industry, including acting and directing.

Green's directorial endeavors are particularly notable, as he helmed four Yiddish-language films shot on location in Poland, starting with his debut in 1935. The films, which include Yidl mitn fidl, Der Purimspiler, Mamele, and A brivele der mamen, showcased his talent not only as a director but also as a screenwriter, as he penned the scripts for all but one of these projects. Green passed away in 1996, leaving behind a legacy as one of the few directors of Yiddish-language films and a significant contributor to the world of Yiddish theater and cinema.
