Joseph Lupo
16th-century Italian musician and composer
Joseph Lupo was a 16th-century Italian musician and composer who spent a significant portion of his career in England. Born in Venice, he was the son of Ambrose and his first wife Lucia, and came from a family of musicians. His father and brother Peter also worked as court musicians, highlighting the strong musical heritage of the Lupo family. Before establishing himself in England, Joseph and his brother Peter spent time in Antwerp, eventually making their way to the English court.
Joseph Lupo's career at the English court spanned 40 years or more, during which time he succeeded Paul Galliardello, another Italian musician who had returned to Venice. He married Laura, a member of the prominent Bassano family, and went on to have sons who followed in his footsteps as court musicians. Notably, Joseph played at the funeral of Elizabeth I, a testament to his enduring presence at the English court. His sons Thomas and Horatio also became accomplished musicians, with Thomas likely born in London, ensuring the continuation of the Lupo family's musical legacy.
