Lucian Raicu

Romanian literary critic and journalist (1934–2006)

Lucian Raicu was a prominent Romanian literary critic, journalist, and magazine editor, born in 1934. He came from a family with strong literary connections, being the brother of novelist Virgil Duda and the husband of writer Sonia Larian. Raicu's early life was marked by his involvement in leftist causes, which led to his acceptance into the Romanian Communist Party after World War II. As the communist regime took hold in 1948, he pursued his literary interests at the Eminescu School of Literature in Bucharest.

Raicu's professional career began to take shape when he was drafted into the cultural establishment before the age of twenty. He worked as a staff critic at Viața Romînească, initially adhering to Socialist Realism and overseeing the literary scene for ideological conformity. However, he also privately explored dissident views, questioning Marxist literary criticism and reading banned works by Romanian and French authors alongside friends like Nicolae Labiș and Paul Goma. Raicu's formal education was completed in 1958, when he graduated from the University of Bucharest, marking an important milestone in his professional development as a literary critic and journalist. He passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy as a notable figure in Romanian literary circles.
