Mahieu le Juif

Mahieu le Juif was a medieval musician who belonged to the tradition of Old French trouvères. The meaning of his name, "Matthew the Jew", suggests a connection to the Jewish faith, and his own compositions imply a conversion to Christianity. As a trouvère, Mahieu le Juif was part of a cultural movement that flourished in northern France, characterized by the creation and performance of lyric poems and songs.

Only a limited number of Mahieu le Juif's works have survived to the present day, consisting of two songs, one of which includes a melody. Despite the scarcity of his extant compositions, Mahieu le Juif's identity has been the subject of some confusion, with some sources mistakenly identifying him as Mahieu de Gant. However, a manuscript containing the works of both musicians clearly distinguishes between the two, establishing Mahieu le Juif as a distinct figure in the history of medieval music.
