Marcus Elieser Bloch
German doctor and naturalist
Marcus Elieser Bloch was a prominent German doctor and naturalist, specializing in the field of biology. Born in 1723, Bloch was raised in a Jewish family where Hebrew was the primary language spoken, but he also acquired proficiency in German and Latin. His educational pursuits led him to study anatomy, which ultimately laid the foundation for his future career as a physician in Berlin.
As a naturalist, Bloch made significant contributions to the field of ichthyology, compiling a comprehensive multivolume catalog of fish species from around the world, accompanied by detailed illustrations. His extensive natural history collection, with a particular focus on fish specimens, served as a valuable resource for his research. Throughout his career, Bloch authored numerous papers on various aspects of natural history, comparative anatomy, and physiology, cementing his reputation as one of the most influential ichthyologists of the 18th century until his death in 1799.
