Pierre Nora

French historian (1931–2025)

Pierre Nora was a renowned French historian, born in 1931 and passing away in 2025. His contributions to the field of history were marked by significant editorial and academic endeavors. Notably, he played a pivotal role at Éditions Gallimard, where he founded the Library of Social Sciences in 1966, followed by the Library of Histories in 1970. These initiatives underscored his commitment to advancing historical scholarship and making it more accessible.

Nora's academic career was further distinguished by his appointment as director of studies at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, a position he held from 1977 for over four decades. His most celebrated work, however, is arguably the direction of Les Lieux de Mémoire, a comprehensive four-volume project that explored the concept of national memory through places and objects of remembrance in French history. This seminal work redefined the approach to historical narrative, earning him recognition within the academic community and beyond, including his election to the prestigious Académie Française in 2001.
