Rahel Szalit-Marcus

Rahel Szalit-Marcus was a Polish artist of Jewish descent, born as Rahel Markus in Telz, a town in the Kovno region of Lithuania, which was then under the Russian Empire. Her artistic career flourished in Berlin during the Weimar Republic, a period marked by significant cultural and artistic transformation. Szalit-Marcus's work later took her to Paris in the 1930s, where she continued to develop her unique style.

Szalit-Marcus is best remembered for her poignant illustrations that captured the essence of East European Jewish life and culture. Through her art, she provided a window into the traditions and experiences of Jewish communities in the region. Tragically, her life was cut short when she was murdered at Auschwitz in August 1942. Despite her untimely death, Szalit-Marcus's artistic legacy endures, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Eastern European Jewry and the tumultuous era in which she lived.
