Samuel Norton Tomkin

South African architect (1908–2013)

Samuel Norton Tomkin was a renowned architect born in the United Kingdom in 1908, who later became a prominent figure in South Africa. He formed a notable partnership with Norman Leonard Hanson and Nathan Finkelstein, establishing the firm Hanson, Tomkin & Finkelstein. This collaboration resulted in the creation of one of the most influential architectural groups in South Africa, operating with significant impact both before and after the war.

Throughout his career, Tomkin designed a wide range of buildings across the Transvaal and Natal regions, including university facilities, hospitals, government buildings, and synagogues. One of his notable works is the Great Synagogue in Durban. Tomkin's contributions to South African architecture were recognized with the Gold Medal of Honour from the Institute of South African Architects in 1965. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 105, leaving behind a legacy of architectural excellence in South Africa.
