Sesto Pals

Russian-born Romanian and Israeli writer (1912/3–2002)

Sesto Pals, born Simion Șestopali, was a writer of Russian origin who spent his life in Romania and Israel. Active in the field of philosophy, he was also recognized for his work as a poet and graphic artist. Born in either 1912 or 1913, Pals emerged as a notable figure in his teenage years, collaborating with friend and fellow intellectual Gherasim Luca on the avant-garde review Alge.

Pals' early work on Alge, which pushed the boundaries of censorship with its experimental aesthetics, led to prosecution and ultimately, a reclusive lifestyle. In contrast, his associate Luca continued to build a public profile as a leading figure in Romanian surrealism. Despite his withdrawal from public life, Pals left a lasting legacy as a poet-philosopher and artist, passing away in 2002 at the age of 89 or 90.
