Shimon Peres

Israeli politician (1923–2016)

Shimon Peres was a prominent Israeli politician and statesman who played a significant role in the country's government for over seven decades. His extensive career in politics included serving as the Prime Minister of Israel on two separate occasions, from 1984 to 1986 and again from 1995 to 1996. In addition to his tenure as Prime Minister, Peres also held the office of President of Israel from 2007 to 2014. Throughout his career, he was a member of twelve different cabinets and represented five distinct political parties, demonstrating his ability to work across party lines.

Peres' dedication to public service was evident in his long-standing membership in the Knesset, Israel's legislative body. First elected in November 1959, he went on to serve continuously for 48 years, with the exception of a brief three-month period in early 2006. This remarkable tenure earned him the distinction of being the longest-serving member in the Knesset's history. At the time of his retirement from politics in 2014, Peres held the unique position of being the world's oldest head of state, and he was also recognized as a vital link to Israel's founding generation, having made aliyah and later becoming a leader in the country's government.
