Walter Kaufmann (composer)

Austria-Hungarian music composer (1907–1984)

Walter Kaufmann was a renowned music composer born in 1907 in Karlsbad, Bohemia, within the Austria-Hungarian Empire. His early musical training took place in Prague and Berlin, where he honed his skills as a composer, conductor, and ethnomusicologist. However, with the rise of Nazi persecution, Kaufmann was forced to flee, seeking refuge in Bombay, where he worked until India gained independence.

Kaufmann's journey eventually took him to London and Canada, before he settled in the United States. In 1957, he joined the faculty at Indiana University Bloomington as a professor of musicology, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his career. Seven years later, in 1964, Kaufmann became a naturalized U.S. citizen, solidifying his connection to his adopted country. Through his work as a composer, educator, and librettist, Kaufmann made significant contributions to the field of music, leaving a lasting legacy until his passing in 1984.
