Yochanan Sofer

Yochanan Sofer was a prominent figure in Judaism, serving as the rebbe of the Erlau dynasty. Born in Eger, Hungary, he came from a lineage of revered rebbes, with both his father and grandfather holding the same position in their time. This heritage likely played a significant role in shaping his spiritual leadership and guiding his community.

Following his survival of the Holocaust, Sofer embarked on a mission to revitalize Jewish scholarship and practice. He achieved this by founding a yeshiva, initially establishing it in Hungary before relocating it to Jerusalem a few years later. Through this institution, Sofer worked to preserve and promote Jewish traditions, ensuring the continuation of his family's legacy and contributing to the post-war resurgence of Jewish life.
