Ernst Haeussermann
Austrian theatre director and actor (1916–1984)
Ernst Haeussermann was a theatre director and actor of Austrian nationality, born in Germany in 1916. His father, Reinhold Häussermann, was also an actor, and this familial connection likely influenced Haeussermann's career path. However, his Jewish heritage led to significant challenges, including his forced departure from Austria following the Anschluss in 1938. This event marked a turning point in his life, prompting him to seek refuge in the United States.
In the United States, Haeussermann appeared in various small roles in Hollywood productions, leveraging his talents to establish a foothold in the American film industry. After the war, he returned to Austria, where he went on to work with the country's most prominent theatres, reestablishing himself as a prominent figure in the Austrian theatre scene. Throughout his life, Haeussermann's personal relationships also played a significant role, including his marriages to fellow émigré Johanna Lothar and later to actress Susi Nicoletti. Haeussermann passed away in 1984, leaving behind a legacy that reflects his perseverance and dedication to his craft despite the challenges he faced.
