Estelle Hecht

Estelle Hecht was a multifaceted artist and gallerist from Montreal, Quebec, known for her contributions to the Canadian art scene. As a Jewish Canadian, she brought a unique perspective to her work, which spanned various mediums including engraving and painting. Hecht's artistic foundation was laid at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, where she honed her skills under the guidance of renowned professors such as Jacques de Tonnancour, Arthur Lismer, and Moses "Moe" Reinblatt.

Hecht's impact on the art world extended beyond her own creative pursuits, as she also played a significant role in promoting the work of other artists. In 1961, she founded Gallery 1640, a print gallery that showcased a diverse range of artistic talent. Tragically, her life and legacy were cut short in 1971, when a fire destroyed her gallery and claimed her life. Despite her untimely passing, Estelle Hecht's contributions to Canadian art and her dedication to nurturing the creative community continue to be remembered and appreciated.
