Fanny Rabel
Polish-born Mexican artist
Fanny Rabel, born Fanny Rabinovich, was a Polish-born Mexican artist who made significant contributions to the field of modern art. Born in Poland, she relocated to Mexico with her family in 1938, where she pursued her passion for art at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda". It was during her time at this institution that she formed a close friendship with the renowned artist Frida Kahlo, and became the sole female member of "Los Fridos", a group of students under Kahlo's guidance.
Rabel's artistic career was marked by her association with some of the most prominent figures of Mexican muralism, including Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, with whom she worked as an assistant and apprentice. She created several notable murals, with "Ronda en el tiempo" at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City being one of her most significant works. In addition to her murals, Rabel also produced canvases and other artworks, often featuring children as subjects and exploring ecological themes, particularly in a series of works initiated in 1979. Her pioneering work as a female muralist and her early adoption of environmental themes have cemented her position as a trailblazer in the world of modern art.
