Gluck (painter)
British painter (1895–1978)
Gluck was a British painter born in 1895 and active until their death in 1978. They were associated with the Lamorna artists' colony, located near Penzance, where they developed a distinctive style characterized by portraits and floral paintings. In addition to their work as a painter, Gluck also made a notable contribution to the design of picture frames, introducing a new and innovative style.
Gluck's personal life was marked by relationships with several women, including Nesta Obermer, with whom they created a joint self-portrait titled Medallion. This work is widely regarded as a powerful and iconic statement of lesbian identity. Gluck was known for their unconventional approach to personal identity, rejecting traditional forenames and honorifics in favor of a more androgynous and simple designation. At various times, they were also referred to as Peter and Hig, reflecting their preference for a more fluid and flexible sense of self.
