Hilda Kuper

South African anthropologist

Hilda Kuper was a prominent South African anthropologist, recognized for her in-depth research on Swazi culture. Her work in this field was facilitated by a grant from the International African Institute of London, which enabled her to study and interact with the royal family of Swaziland. Through her research, Kuper gained a deep understanding of Swazi traditions and their embodiment in the political vision of the kingdom.

Kuper's association with the Swazi royal family, particularly King Sobhuza II, was notable for its closeness. Her work illustrated the king's political vision, and over time, King Sobhuza II and Kuper developed a strong friendship. In recognition of her contributions to the understanding of Swazi culture, Kuper was awarded Swazi citizenship in 1970, a honor personally bestowed by the king. This distinction reflects the significance of her research and her unique relationship with the Swazi monarchy.
