Joseph G. Weiss

Scholar of Jewish mysticism and Hasidism

Joseph G. Weiss was a prominent scholar of Jewish mysticism and Hasidism, specializing in the field of literature. Born in Budapest, Hungary, to a Neolog family, Weiss pursued his academic interests in both university and Jewish Theological Seminary settings. His early education laid the groundwork for his future expertise in Jewish mysticism. Following his emigration to Mandatory Palestine, Weiss continued his studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he was mentored by the esteemed Professor Gershom Scholem from 1941 to 1950.

Weiss's academic career took a significant turn upon his move to England in 1950. Initially, he taught at a Jewish school in Leeds, instructing children between the ages of 5 and 11. He later held various research and teaching positions in London, Manchester, and Oxford, demonstrating his versatility and expertise as a scholar. Ultimately, Weiss became the director of the Institute of Jewish Studies at University College London, a testament to his dedication and contributions to the field of Jewish mysticism and Hasidism. Through his work, Weiss established himself as a leading authority in his area of specialization.
