Kurt Gerron

German actor (1897–1944)

Kurt Gerron was a German Jewish actor and film director, born in 1897. He initially achieved success in the entertainment industry, particularly in cabaret and film, prior to the onset of World War II. Gerron's career flourished during this period, showcasing his talent in various performances. However, his life took a dramatic turn with the rise of the Nazi regime, which ultimately led to his professional demise.

Gerron's attempts to escape persecution by fleeing to the Netherlands with his family were unsuccessful, as the Nazis eventually occupied the country. He was subsequently sent to the Theresienstadt Ghetto, where he was coerced into creating a propaganda film, Theresienstadt: Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlungsgebiet. Tragically, Gerron and his wife, Olga Gerson-Meyer, were later transported to Auschwitz concentration camp, where they were murdered in 1944. The propaganda film, completed shortly before the war's end, was never publicly screened and only fragments of it remain today.
