Moses Chayyim Catalan

Italian poet and rabbi

Moses Chayyim Catalan was a notable Italian poet and rabbi, born to a family of distinction, with his father Abraham Catalan being a physician. He served as a rabbi in his native town, where he would eventually pass away in 1661 at an advanced age. Catalan's literary talents were accompanied by his role as a teacher, with one of his notable students being Isaac Vita Cantarini, who addressed his early letters to him.

Catalan's poetic works showcase his versatility and skill with language. One of his poems, written to celebrate the marriage of his sister Perla to Raphael Gans Levi, is particularly noteworthy for its bilingual nature, readable in both Hebrew and Italian. This poem was later reprinted by Johann Christoph Wolf. Additionally, Catalan composed poems for other significant occasions, including a piece in honor of Shabbethai Astruc in 1645 and an elegy on Lamentations in ottava rima, which was published in Padua. His unpublished work, "Metzaref ha-Sekel", remains a testament to his literary endeavors.
