Moshe Ha-Elion
Greek concentration camps survivor (1925–2022)
Moshe Ha-Elion was a Greek Holocaust survivor and writer, born in 1925. He endured immense hardship during World War II, surviving the notorious concentration camps of Auschwitz, Mauthausen, Melk, and Ebensee, as well as the brutal death march. His experiences during this period would later serve as the foundation for his literary works. Ha-Elion settled in Israel, where he would go on to build a life and a family, eventually becoming a father of two, with six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
As a writer, Moshe Ha-Elion authored a memoir titled "The Straits of Hell," which chronicles his experiences in the Nazi extermination camps. In addition to his memoir, he wrote three poems in Ladino, "La djovenika al lager," "Komo komian el pan," and "En marcha de la muerte," which were published together under the title "En los Kampos de la Muerte." Ha-Elion also demonstrated his linguistic versatility by translating Homer's Odyssey into Ladino. Through his writing, he shared his story with the world, leaving behind a legacy that would outlast him. Moshe Ha-Elion passed away in 2022, at the age of 97.
