Ruby Daniel
Indian Navy personnel and song translator (1912–2002)
Ruby Daniel was a trailblazing individual of Cochin Jewish heritage from the Malayali community. Born in 1912, she made history by becoming the first Malayali woman to join the Indian Navy, paving the way for future generations. Her achievements extended beyond her naval career, as she also became the first Cochin Jewish woman to publish a book, leaving a lasting legacy in the literary world.
Daniel's most notable contribution, however, lies in her work as a translator in the field of linguistics. Between 1982 and 1999, she dedicated herself to translating over 120 Judeo-Malayalam women's songs into English. This remarkable effort not only preserved an important part of Cochin Jewish cultural heritage but also sparked an ongoing international project to translate and analyze these songs. Through her tireless work, Daniel ensured the songs and stories of her community would be shared with a wider audience, cementing her legacy as a pioneering figure in the preservation of Cochin Jewish culture until her passing in 2002.
