Sidney Rittenberg

Sidney Rittenberg was a renowned American scholar and linguist, specializing in Chinese literature and language. Born in 1921, he spent a significant portion of his life in China, from 1944 to 1980, during which he became closely acquainted with key figures of the Chinese Communist Party, including Mao Zedong, Zhu De, and Zhou Enlai. His time in China was marked by his presence at Yan'an, a pivotal location during the Chinese Communist Revolution.

Rittenberg's professional career in China involved working with prominent media outlets, such as the Xinhua News Agency and Radio Peking. Notably, he was one of the earliest American citizens to join the Chinese Communist Party, as documented in his autobiography, The Man Who Stayed Behind. However, his experiences in China were also marked by periods of solitude, having spent considerable time in confinement. Through his unique experiences and insights, Rittenberg developed a profound understanding of Chinese culture and politics, cementing his position as a distinguished scholar in his field. He passed away in 2019, at the age of 98.
